with Shoeb Ahmad and Reuben Ingall

Live Super 8 projections by Louise Curham
    Smiths Bookshop
    Tuesday 5 March, 8pm
    $5

“The icon of post-everything music” - Lawrence English (::Room40::)

For the past 40 years Mike Cooper has traced a path completely his own as an international musical explorer, performing and recording, solo and in a number of inspired groupings and a variety of genres. With his roots lying in acoustic country blues he has, arguably, stretched the possibilities of the guitar even more than his better known contemporaries Davy Graham, Bert Jansch, John Renbourne, etc. by pursuing it into the more avant-garde musical areas also occupied by contemporary guitar innovators such as Elliott Sharp, Keith Rowe, Fred Frith and Marc Ribot. with an eclectic mix of the many styles he has practiced over the years. Ranging freely through traditional country blues, folk, original songs, free improvisation, pop songs, exotica, electronic music, electro-acoustic music, and ‘sonic gestural’ playing utilising open tunings and extended techniques.

He is also a soundscape artist; film and video maker and composes and performs live music for classic and contemporary silent films.

His favored instruments – his voice, a vintage 1930’s National tri-cone resophonic guitar and a handmade carbon fibre copy of the same guitar (a gift from the late Allen Timmins) both played acoustically and/or ‘treated’ through a series of digital sampling and looping devices.

He is also a music journalist, writing features for magazines, particularly on Pacific music and musicians, a collector of Hawaiian shirts, runs his own Hipshot record imprint and appears on more records than he can remember.

Mike will be joined on the night by Shoeb Ahmad (samplers/pedals) and Reuben Ingall (electric guitar/laptop), while Louise Curham bringing light with her super 8 projections to the warm surrounds of Smiths Bookshop.

    Spartak - Catch/Control single launch

with A Drone Coda and Deaf Cat

    Smiths Bookshop
    Friday 1st March, 8pm
    $5 at the door

Canberra experimentalists Spartak have been going through a period of change since ‘Nippon’ (a collection of live improvisations from a Japanese tour) was released in October 2011 on the New Weird Australia label. Since then, they have bunkered down in their studio Brick Lane (amongst playing the odd show) and will debut the first fruits of their labour, ‘Catch/Control’ at Smiths Bookshop on Friday 1st March. Supported by post-punkers A Drone Coda and beat-smith Deaf Cat, this single anticipates Shoeb Ahmad and Evan Dorrian’s upcoming EP ‘Posessions’, their first release with new member Matt Lustri, and displays their collective foray into rhythmic grooves and indie song-craft amongst the usual electronic manipulations and tension in their music.

Listen to the upcoming single here: https://soundcloud.com/hellosquare/spartak-catch-control

‘Catch/Control’ will be available as a download from the hellosQuare bandcamp backed by remixes by Inch-time, Icarus, Reuben Ingall and Deaf Cat on March 1st 2013.

  3. Philippe Petit / Shoeb Ahmad Australia 2013

    image

With a history that spans 30+ years that takes in collaborations with visonary artists such as Lydia Lunch, Justin Broadrick (Godflesh), The The, Ashley Wales (Spring Heel Jack) and Derek Jarman to sit alongside releases on esteemed labels Mute, Utech, Southern and SubRosa amongst others, renowned English soundtrack composer/songwriter Simon Fisher-Turner and French turntablist/’musical travel agent’ Philippe Petit join hellosQuare to present their first collaborative release - A Ti Dou Li Dum A Ti Dou Li Dou Ti Dé.

A beautiful melangé of tuned strings, percussive klang and cracked tones, the stereo world found here is a clear vision of music explored from a different angle, one mined from a never-ending quest that Fisher-Turner and Petit continue with, to experiment with sound, from punk and noise rock to minimalism and electronics.

To celebrate the release of this album, Philippe will be coming out to Australia for the first time this January to perform improvised sets with the help of hellosQuare boss Shoeb Ahmad on electric guitar and sampler. Dates include appearances at the much loved improv dates organized by The NowNow in Sydney and MakeItUp Club in Melbourne.

  5. My Disco

hellosQuare is stoked to welcome back to this sleepy town our good friends MY DISCO before they head off to Europe to play a string of shows including the amazing Supersonic Festival in Birmingham, UK.

Australia’s most enigmatic trio have recorded two new hypnotically brain-bending tracks that are inexplicably addictive, coupled with remixes from like-minded friends and world renowned artists Justin K Broadrick (Jesu, Godflesh), and rising UK post-industrial outfit Factory Floor (DFA).

Picking up where they left off on 2010′s acclaimed Little Joy, ‘Wrapped Coast’ is post-punk clatter at its finest, like a slightly deranged bastard spawn of Boredoms and Mission of Burma. The beat has clear nods to late night dance and debauchery, making Factory Floor’s “The Michael Cliffe House Remix” a logical extension of the original.

The b-side stretches out, showcasing one of My Disco’s strongest suits: their ability to craft mesmerizing music using space as their secret weapon. The effects are staggering, slightly creepy, and strangely seductive – made all the more so by Justin K Broadrick’s intensely sprawling remix.
Supporting are Spartak in their recently expanded live line-up that explores minimalist electronics and micro-dub basslines coiled around tight rhythms and mysterious vocals while Golden Blonde debut new material from their recent sessions in the studio after spending recent years better known as the band Kasha, touching on the wild sounds of clipped beats, sprawling melodies and lush songwriting.

    ANU Bar, Canberra
starts 8pm, $20 at the door.

  13. Pollen Trio Live-to-Air Set & Interview

“In January 2012, Canberra’s Pollen Trio were in Sydney for the Now Now annual festival of ‘exploratory music’ – a genuine feast for lovers of experimental, spontaneous and downright surprising music. The trio uncomfortably fit the genre of ‘avant jazz’, instead taking in a broad range of influences – most directly from their ‘day jobs’ as members of well-known Canberra bands, Spartak and Kasha. With a love of Flying Lotus and Autechre, blended with a reverence for non-trad jazz masters such as Morton Feldman and Ornette Coleman, there’s a lot to listen out for in this podcast, when the trio (masquerading as a duo) played a live-to-sir set on New Weird Australia, on Thursday January 19th 2012.”
